Personal Quests

 

Personal Quests are great deeds done for no other reason than the doing. Fulfilling these quests should take an extraordinary amount of time and effort, and the goal should be something few can ever have claimed to do. Personal quests take a minimum of one month to complete (oftem much longer) and require an expenditure of resources worth 1000 gp per character level (representing materials, bribes, gifts, offerings, and other costs).

 

Completion of a Personal Quest increases one or more ability scores. This is a permenant increase (not a bonus), just as if the character had attained a level divisible by 4. The completion of a personal quests never results in a gain of Experience Points or Treasure, although events during the quest might (notably encounters with Wandering Monsters or surviving specific hazards).

 

Sample Personal Quests

 

  • Travel from Skarn to Makril on foot, learning the name of everyone you pass (+1 Con, +1 Cha).
  • Armwrestle one person in every tavern in Skarn City. Win or Lose, always buy the whole bar a round (+1 Str, +1 Cha).
  • Have an Androsphinx, a Gynosphinx, and a Heraciosphinx each teach you its personal strategy at chess (+2 Int).
  • Collect 100 live dragonflies using chopsticks (+2 Dex).
  • Traverse the length of the Hoartooth Mountains, travelling only on the spine, peak-to-peak (+2 Str).
  • Swim upriver from the southern border to Hellek, never walking more than 1 mile in a day (+1 Str, +1 Con).
  • Spar with the monks at nine monasteries (+1 Dex, +1 Wis).
  • Record the personal biographies of a Monarch, a High Priest, and an Archmage (+1 Int, +1 Wis).
  • Befriend an Archon, a Demon, a Devil, and an Eladrin. Introduce them to each other (+2 Cha).
  • Trek through the Merkon Jungle to deliver a precious tome to the Tree of Knowledge (+1 Con, +1 Int)
  • Trade a story to ten different Haloran storykeepers (+1 Wis, +1 Cha).
  • Make your way the length of the Sultan's Wall without being spotted by either Laqar or Renlari (+1 Dex, +1 Wis).
  • Challenge the champions of each Gurd tribe to an archery match (+1 Str, +1 Dex).
  • Race twenty Rashar horsemen from one sea to the other (+1 Con, +1 Dex).
  • Live among the Takains for 100 days without speaking a word (+2 con).
